That one time I gave my husband the silent treatment

A behind-the-scenes look at my own unfiltered shenanigans from the marketing trenches. A real-life, no BS view of what it's really like to market a small business and ideas to make it all feel a whole lot easier!

I saw an Instagram post a couple weeks ago that made me laugh out loud.

It was about how women in particular tend to do things in a frantic (dare we say manic?) way.

And it brought back a very vivid experience where my husband told me I was being "manic" about a big house project I had planned. And we can all imagine just how well that went over.

I lost my shit. I completely ignored him on the entire 2-hour drive back from Boise to McCall.

Like SILENT.

S.I.L.E.N.T.

Stewing.

Pissed off that he could ever call my excitement and passion and commitment to something he would also benefit from anything but humbling.

We laugh about it now - after that car ride he actually Googled the definition and I had to begrudgingly admit he was pretty spot on with that word. Damn.

man·ic/ˈmanik/
adjective
showing wild, uncontrolled excitement and energy.

I sort of forgot about that day until I saw that Instagram post and started noticing that frantic energy is how I go about most of my day.

I scrub my face like I’m in a race to get my makeup off. Not calm circles. Not gentle, calming motions. It's like the sink might disappear if I don’t hurry.

I clean the house the same way. Aggressively wiping counters. Vacuuming back and forth like it is supposed to be a workout or something.

I walk fast. I talk fast. I type fast.

And once I started noticing it, I couldn’t unsee it.

So many things I do at an unnecessarily fast pace, even when I’m not late, not rushed, and not under any real pressure.

That speed, that made-up "must get this done as fast as possible" vibe isn’t actually getting me anywhere faster.

Which is when my brain did what it always does and tied this back to marketing.

Because I see the same frantic energy here, too.

We scroll.

We see what everyone else is doing.

And suddenly it feels like we’re behind.

So we throw up a quick post. Boost something without much thought. Say yes to a sponsorship or ad or idea we hadn’t planned or budgeted for.

Do things quickly, impulsively, a little panicked… hoping it moves the needle.

But marketing doesn’t work that way. It’s a long game. There is no need for a frantic/manic rush.

This year one of my goals was to practice slowing down on purpose (so if you see me weirdly walking fast then changing my stride suddenly to a slower pace you'll know why).

I think marketing in 2026 deserves that same energy.

There is no need for a frantic pace. There is no need to add more cortisol to our already overtaxed systems.

A slower, more strategic approach wins every single time. Those spur-of-the-moment decisions don’t actually align with what will grow the business anyway.

Sot this week I humbly submit your (and my) reminder that we don’t need to keep up.

We don’t need to sprint.

We just need to choose the right one or two things and do them well.

While walking slowly (Maybe. If I can manage it.).

A real-life, no BS view of what it's really like to market a small business and ideas to make it all feel a whole lot easier! I have some pretty big news. I’m hosting my first-ever webinar on February 11 at 10am MST, and we are going straight for the topic that makes otherwise confident, capable business owners quietly close their laptops and say, “I’ll deal with that later.” SEO. Yes. That SEO. The big bad...

A real-life, no BS view of what it's really like to market a small business and ideas to make it all feel a whole lot easier! This year I embraced my witchy tendencies. And yes, there is a slightly witchy side of my personality - ha! During Yule I did a 13-day intentions ritual in lieu of trying to make New Years resolutions. It's pretty simple - you write down 13 intentions for the year, fold them up so...

In 5th grade, I did a science experiment to test which cleaning product worked the best. I've always been a bit obsessed with cleaning. It was all part of learning the scientific process, controlling variables, and analyzing data as objectively as possible to get real, data-backed...
