Post-it Notes, Pageants, and the Long Game

A behind-the-scenes look at my own unfiltered shenanigans from the marketing trenches. A real-life, no BS view of what it's really like to market a small business and ideas to make it all feel a whole lot easier!

This week marks the unofficial end of summer for our family - the kids (and my husband) are back to school (insert small happy dance!). While it’s a little sad to see summer go, I’ll admit: I’m ready for the routine again.

This is also the season for one of my very favorite things...new school supplies.

Fresh paper.

Unopened crayons.

A brand-new pack of markers that haven’t been worn down by overzealous coloring sessions or dried out because someone forgot to put the lid on.

Pure magic!

It may be the thing I miss the most about going to school myself. Sadly, no more.

These days, my “school supply” indulgence is relegated to Post-it notes. And I am not too proud to admit that I have a bit of a...problem. My car, my bathroom, my office - Post-its are everywhere.

I have stacks and stacks because I find new colors I love and have to have.

And while I will own up to my weird obsession, I am going to put the blame for my fascination with these little pieces of sticky paper on my mom.

Growing up, she would put a little post-it note in my lunch most days. Always a fun little surprise!

Over the years, these little notes became part of our family communication. And so important, that I actually gave a speech about them being one of the best inventions ever. Seriously.

In high school when I was in our homecoming queen pageant (yes, it was an actual pageant), part of the competition involved giving a speech on an invention that’s had an important impact in your life.

I chose Post-it notes (obviously).

Turns out the girl who gave her speech on insulin as an important invention won, but I contend my point of view was more unique. Still a bit bent out of shape over that one.

I suppose it is all in the perspective. For me, I put a lot of stock in those small, unassuming things that can have a big impact over time.

Small consistent touches that leave a big impression.

Not immediate. Not a breakthrough. But still important.

As we embark on a new season this week, take this as your reminder that someone out there is noticing your efforts.

Even if they haven't said anything yet (or purchased from you), it doesn't mean they aren't learning, smiling, or nodding along with you.

Or putting ideas you inspired on a Post-It note.

A real-life, no BS view of what it's really like to market a small business and ideas to make it all feel a whole lot easier! We are officially back from our whirlwind summer travels! It all started with a 10-hour drive to Montana for a music festival, 10 hours back to Idaho, a two-day turnaround, and then we were on a plane to New Jersey with two kids in tow for a two-week stay on the East Coast. Concert...

A behind-the-scenes look at my own unfiltered shenanigans from the marketing trenches. A real-life, no BS view of what it's really like to market a small business and ideas to make it all feel a whole lot easier! One of my very favorite things to do is go camping. And this year, for some reason, I decided to resurrect an old-school tradition: Jiffy Pop. You know, that ridiculous shakeable popcorn you hold over the fire? What I forgot is how long it takes to make the stupid thing. The fire’s...

I swear it is rare these days, but every now and then, a little snippet of advice really hits home. It started last year around the first week of school. My husband is a teacher and he was headed back to work. My son was...
